VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Submitted by dirmar on January 23, 2008 - 05:56.
I have tried to solve this myself, but have to give up. Can anyone tell me why these tours don't work in Firefox (or Opera), latest versions.

Thanks

Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Hello
In your html file, you have put different informations:
<param name=src value="SPi-V.dcr"><param name=swURL value="dswmedia/ridge.xml">
(which is incorrect - SPi-V.dcr shuld be in dswmedia folder and rigde.xml should be relative to dcr file)
and next:
src="dswmedia/SPi-V.dcr" swURL="ridge.xml"(which is correct here)
Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
I have moved your comment into a thread of its own.
Myksa is right in pointing out the src and swURL parameters should match between the object/param and embed tags.
Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Thanks Myksa and Aldo. I made the changes. Now it is working on Firefox and Opera locally but not online. Here is another simpler link: http://www.okvts.com/bigwhite/village.htm
Thanks for your trouble

Ah, the infamous 4836 network error. You have to make sure the xml file does not get gzip encoded.

Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Gee Aldo, don't forget, you're talking to a technical moron (-; How would I do that? Preventing the gzip encoding. And what is it?
Never mind Aldo. Via Google I ran across an earlier thread on this forum and I got some information. Since I understand that the problem has to do more with config. of the server I uploaded the file on my free webspace from my ISP: http://www.members.shaw.ca/dengelhardt/bigwhite/village.htm
and low and behold, they don't use gzip encoding and the display works. I will contact my server that I use for all vts and ask them not to use gzip encoding. See what I get back. Would it be a big thing for them to comply with that?
Cheers
Dirk
Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Sorry, I did not mean to put you down. The 'more info' link actually points towards two threads that have possible workarounds. The 4836 error is frustrating for me too, but it is one of those bugs where browsermakers and adobe are accusing eachother of being at the root of the bug, so chances of it getting fixed in eg the next release of Shockwave are unfortunately slim... So the bug is indeed infamous.
Depending on how your host is configured, you might be able to fix it yourself with a .htaccess file. But by all means, ask your host first.
Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Sorry if for the confusion Aldo. (-: I did not think you had put me down. Never noticed the "more info". In fact I think you're an excellent captain (moderator) on an excellent ship (forum). However, you have to admit, most of the time you're a bunch of "super-techies" that us "regular folks" have a hard time to follow, sometimes.
Good news! It took the host server two tries but they got it changed! It's working on both browsers. Not that my life depended on it, but it's nice to know that you get just about 100% of all PC surfers. I do virtual tours for Real Estate and am glad I don't have to worry about the one agent that discovers that he might pay for a service that not all of his potential clients might be able to see.
Thanks again for a good product AND service.

Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
Gee Aldo, after all that I feel like a klutz now (moron really would be the better word). When I checked this morning (to early for me I guess) I accidentally hit the link in my visited pages drop down box to the web page on my ISP server. Of course it worked. Here is the bad news: After all this talk it still does not work on my main server!
I have let them know and will keep you updated.
Thanks again
Dirk
PS: I this message doen't seem to make sense it might be that the previous message has not (and might not) be posted. I had reported the "good news" that the server had fixed and it was working... Disregard this message if the previous post shows up.
Re: VTs not runnung in Firefox or Opera
I am happy to report that SPi-V is now working in Firefox and in Opera. After my server somewhere in the back and forth mail announced that "Firefox and Opera do not support Shockwave...sorry..." they managed to finally find someone that new how to turn gzip encoding of for my domain. It sure feels good to know that things can be corrected when you know what you're talking about, thanks to the expert advice from some knowledgeable folks, and you all know who I'm talking about. Thanks Aldo!
Maybe this tidbit of information (to contact your host and have them turn off gzip encoding) for folks using SPi-V when they run into the same problem would be handy to have included in your upcoming (-; documentation.
