FACT OF LIFE: Crash with progressive jpgs larger than 4000 x 2000
Hi,
I've been experiencing the same strange behaviour on 2 different computers:
- Desktop: Win2000 with 1,75 GB RAM + 128 MB RAM graphics card
- Laptop: WinXP with 512 MB RAM + 32 MB RAM shared memory graphic card
SPi-V.exe (in simple mode) can only open jpg files up to approx. 4200 x 2100 pixel. Beyond that only a large red cross appears in SPi-V.
When embedded in a html-file the upper size limit on both computers is around 4000 x 2000 pixel. Beyond that, Firefox and Internet Eplorer simply crash when the file has finished loading - on both computers.
I first thought this limit is due to my small (?) graphics RAM, but as I can reproduce it on two quite different computers, I wonder why this always happens around the same image size. I'm using the latest versions of SPi-V and Macromedia. I did not found anything on that topic in the forum.
Greetings,
-Stephan

Re: Crash with images larger than 4000 x 2000
Stephan,
Strange situation. It never happens to me.
I always use 4000x2000 files for internet files and often for Director's presentations. This resolution is ok when you consider the time of loading and the quality of images.
Please post links to your images. We can try to reproduce your situation.

Re: Crash with images larger than 4000 x 2000
Hi Karol,
here you are: http://loh.fr/schlossplatz-test/
I tested different image sizes again and could reproduce the error. While doing so I found out that the software used for resizing the original spheric image to the display size might influence a little bit the exact size limit before SPi-V crashes.
I hope this is useful to examine the cause. Thanks for your help!
Greetings,
-Stephan

Hello Stephan,
I like your description of your problem - really professional. (who didn't - it's worth of clicking a link - but click red areas but remember that your browser crashes).
Your problem is in saving JPEGs in PROGRESSIVE mode.
SPi-V doesn't support Progressive Jpegs. (see: link )
My firefox crashed when a panorama was loaded.
I hope that this suggestion could help you. If not...Aldo will have to answer.

Re: Crash with images larger than 4000 x 2000
Hi Karol,
thank you very much! That's the trick!
I never thought, that the progressive mode in JPGs could cause problems in SPi-V. I normally use the progressive mode as a default setting for all JPGs I create so that they display faster in a web browser. Well, I'll change that default for spheric images from now on.
But it is funny though, that the progressive mode still works fine in SPi-V for files up to 4000 x 2000 pixel... and beyond that suddenly no file works at all. I could imagine, it wouldn't be too hard to make SPi-V work with both.
Interestingly ptviewer2.jar still does not work with JPGs larger than 3000 x 1500 pixel for me, even when non-progressive.

Re: Crash with images larger than 4000 x 2000
Thanks for trying to get to the bottom of this, and sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Karol is right, progressive JPGs are not supported. It surprises me that the smaller JPGs show up at all. I am pretty sure they didn't before. This is due to a limitation of Shockwave, and not something that SPi-V can help. I will track down the crash, and report my findings to Adobe. With your permission, I'ld like to use your series of images to report the issue, since you have done such a nice job creating them.
