A note about the SPi-V 1.4 beta

I have just uploaded the first SPi-V 1.4 beta. I'm pretty excited about the release, as it is just the beginning of a whole new series of beta release with many exciting new possibilities.

Just to whet your appetite, here is a demo of the new directional audio in the first beta; a reworked version of the simple, 2 node tour. Note how the directional audio not only changes in volume as you move past, but the sound actually travels from left to right (and when you are looking 180 degrees from the sound source, the left and right channel are actually reversed!).

The beta is not without limitations though, and I strongly suggest you do not use it on production sites yet! Some of the limitations are:

  • Non-streaming sounds do not show a progressbar while downloading
  • Using the keyboard controls to go fullscreen/open a file in the standalone applications does not work.

Re: A note about the SPi-V 1.4 beta

Hi Aldo.

This new sound feature works brilliantly. See www.panoscope.co.uk/sound-test for my simple working sample. My only problem is that in order to see how it all works, I have to look at your xml files. I am not clever enough to understand your documentation! This is not a criticism but I wonder if there is a way in which you can make your samples and examples available for download? It would help newbies and non-programmer types like me.

A comment from a friend: he has suggested that it would be extra special if the sound could be made to get louder if you zoom in towards the "source". Is this possible/desirable?

Looking forward to the final release!

Best regards

Simon

Re: A note about the SPi-V 1.4 beta

More examples for download are coming up. Note that there are already downloadable examples available on the downloads page, but not of them include sound at this point.

You can implement the sound zoom idea using a ramp that changes the volume property of the sound.
